February’s Giveaway!

February’s arrival is late! But it looks forward to the end of winter and the hope of spring. Our Bear necklace is a reminder of the coming warmth and the bears awakening from their hibernation. Each one of these is hand braided with both braintan and barktan leather for a delightful color contrast. Not only is the pewter pendent of a bear, but he has left two pewter paw prints behind too. The braid of this necklace measures roughly 24 inches and it has a lobster clasp in the back of it for both safely and the ease of taking on and off. One of the joys of a handmade item is that if you need the braid a different length you can always contact me. Each Bear necklace may have differences in the colors of the leathers in the braid, however it will always be a mix of both braintan and barktan leather tanned by my husband. Last fall I got the closest I’ve ever been to a wild bear while riding bikes with my son. A bear cub actually ran out of the brush and crossed right in front of us. We were extremely busy just trying to get stopped quick enough that we didn’t collide with it. It is not a memory either of us is bound to forget. What bear stories do you have?

January’s Giveaway and New Product!

  January’s new arrival will make you think of the woods. Our Elf necklace is eloquently simple, but reminds one of the beauty of the woods. Leaves, leaves everywhere, tender and new in the spring, filtering the light of summer to create welcomed shade, and dry, rustling, and full of color in the fall. The materials used in making it are braintan, glass beads, pewter, and a wish to be in the forest. Let this necklace remind you of your favorite woodsy hideaway. The length of the cord on this necklace is roughly 20 inches, and it has a lobster claw clasp and ring in the back of the cord for safety and easy of taking on and off. Handcrafted as they are, each is a bit different. as I chose a different blend of beads for each necklace, or you can even your choose the color theme, Who in your life would feel more elf like with one of these adorning their neck?

 
I dedicate my elf necklace design to all the wonderful writers whose stories have taken you, me, and those yet to come on adventures threw other worlds and times from Token’s Lord of the Rings series to Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle, and all the other fun stories both big and small whose writer’s imaginations have defined how we see elves.

December’s Giveaway and New Product!

December’s new arrival is a new twist on a old Christmas tradition. Christmas stockings come in all shapes and sizes, plus out of various materials, so why not braintan and fur? No two of these are really alike. They have so much personality from the character of the leather to the different fur cuffs.  The basic pattern is the same so all the stockings are roughly 5 and 1/2 inches by 4 and 1/2 inches , but from there originality abounds. They are available with a variety of cuffs: raccoon, beaver, muskrat, fox, and even possum, which is my personal favorite. They are crocheted together with hand spun yarn form my sheep to give them that extra handmade touch, and hang by a braintan loop.  Where you choose to hang them is up to you. They make great Christmas ornaments, tags for a package, or stuff it full of something small and precious letting the stocking be you wrapping paper.  Where would seeing one of these hanging make you smile?

 

These braintan stockings reflect our love for traditions. Trapping season is a tradition here. It all started when my husband caught the trapping bug at the age of eight and has been passed down to our children. To this day he still traps in some of the same areas he did when he was young. We are not eliminating any species, just trying to keeping the balance healthy as we go back year after year to the same places with respect and admiration for the animals that we take.  Trapping lies deep in my family history too, as my grandfather built the second story of his families’ home with his trapping money.  The tradition of hand spinning has been tried by all in our home, except my husband, however only two of us have fallen down the rabbit hole of keeping a drop spindle handy. Christmas here is full of ever changing traditions as our lives flex and change through the years. I can hear the words from the musical Fiddler on the Roof…”Tradition, Tradition!” So these handcrafted Christmas stockings are just waiting for you to claim them and start your own traditions! You may choose your fur cuff or let us surprise you.

Beaver Fur Neckbags Available and Learn About Our Monthly Giveaways Starting in November

A warm welcome to our new arrival, a beaver fur neck bag.  As always with handmade/handsewn items each one is unique, however they all are accented with a pewter button and a braintan and hand spun wool braid. The front of the bag is beaver fur while the back is braintan. Yes, is the answer to the often asked question does the bag really open, however it will only hold small treasures as the bag itself measures roughly 3 1/2 by 3 inches on the outside. A fun to wear accent piece that is a great conversation starter.    

These bags are extra special because so much about them is a byproduct of our lives. The braintan is hand tanned by my husband, and is a wonderful high quality product.  The beaver are trapped by him, often at the request of the neighbors and friends to keep the numbers down enough so trees aren’t damaged, or roads and waterways flooded.

Meanwhile my small flock of sheep are busy mowing our grass and producing the wool that I shear and then hand spin into yarn.  Before you ever receive your bag it has had many hours of personalized craftsmanship already invested in it.
